Former FIE Top-100 foilist · Two-time Dutch junior national champion
I founded Bekking Fencing Academy in 2008 after leaving a career in the offshore industry as an ROV Supervisor. Fencing shaped my life—focus, confidence, and the habit of doing hard things. I teach the same to my students.
I’m from the Netherlands and a former FIE Top-100 foil fencer and two-time Dutch junior national champion. I also have ADHD and Dyslexia.
I don’t worship talent. It’s overrated. In fencing there are many “talents”—speed, timing, reach, coordination, decision-making, and more. Nobody has them all.
What matters is effort—how much you put in, consistently, over time. Talent × Effort = Results. Lots of talent with zero effort still equals zero results.
Many students I’ve coached had less “natural” talent than their rivals. By showing up, working honestly, and learning to think on their feet, they passed those rivals.
For kids with ADHD, the energy is not a problem—it’s an advantage once we learn to focus it. My job is to channel that energy into disciplined actions: clear routines, honest feedback, and bouts that require decisions under pressure.
